1. Title & Author: Cougard-Fruman, J. & Fruman, D. (2010). Le trésor brodé de la cathédrale du Puy-en-Velay (Embroidered treasures from the Puy-en-Velay Cathedral). Paris: Albin Michel.

Note: This book only exists in French. It has OUTSTANDING full colour images of Or Nue very closely zoomed in.  


2. Title & Author: Johnstone, P. (2002). High fashion in the church: The place of church vestments in the history of art from the ninth to the nineteenth century. Leeds: Maney Publishing.

Note: This book has an excellent chapter on embroidery in the Renaissance and how Or Nue came to be. It has both colour and black and white plates. It is a historical read.


3. Title & Author: Cole, A. (2019). The goldwork masterclass: Adventures in metal thread embroidery. Invermay, Victoria: Alison Cole Embroidery. 

Note: this book must be ordered from the author in Australia, it is not available on Amazon. It is the latest of books on Goldwork with a good chapter on Or Nue


4. Title & Author: Browne, C., Davies, G., Michael M., & Zoschg, M. (Eds.). (2016). English medieval embroidery: Opus anglicanum. London: Yale University Press with the Victoria & Albert Museum. 

Note: This book is an academic read with many good examples


5. Title & Author: Leeflang, M., Van Schooten, K. (2015). Middeleeuwse borduurkunst uit de Nederlanden. (Medieval embroidery in the Low Countries). Utrecht: Zwolle & Museum Catharijneconvent. 

Note: This book only exists in Dutch and can be hard to find on the second-hand, but it has excellent detailed photographs of both embroidery and paintings.


6. Metal Thread Guide PDF from Berlin Embroidery. A must have for understanding well the sizing and make up of the many kinds of goldwork threads that exist. A bargain for the quantity of information that you get!


7. Title & Author: Burr, T. (2011) Colour Confidence in Embroidery. Binda, Australia. Sally Milner publishing Pty Ltd.

1. Title & Author: Feisner, Edith Anderson (2003). Color Studies.

Note: This is an excellent all around colour theory book which I refer to often


2. Title & Author: Civardi, Giovanni (2006) Art of Drawing: Drawing Light and Shade: Understanding Chiaroscuro.

Note: This book will help sharpen your eye to shading techniques specific to this course


3. Any art book on the early Renaissance - easily found at any public library
